Grade 5 Transformed

We hope that your child has come home excited about Grade 5 and the transformed learning environment. The classroom is not traditional! Rather than all of the students sitting at desks to work, different areas have been created within the classroom to allow students to work in a variety of ways that will best meet their individual learning styles and needs. Individual and group work areas are available. A student may also choose to stand, lie down, sit on a chair or sit on the floor while completing work.

The two straight grade 5 classes here at Terry Fox will do most of their learning together. Lessons will be taught to all of the students together or in smaller groups based on needs. As teachers, we will be delighted to help all of the students grow and progress throughout the year.

The learning curve for us as teachers and for the students will be significant. However, the benefits for the children as they take responsibility for their learning will be numerous.

  1. Good afternoon, My child is new to this province. I was wondering what teaching model the new classroom setting is based on. My child has said that the desks are on a first come first serve basis. Leaving me curious to learn more about the classroom style.

    1. Transforming Learning Space is about meeting the needs of the students and student learning. We work together with the students to create a learning environment that recognizes all learners and their learning styles. Movement is an important part of healthy and active living. By creating flexible seating learning environments, and becoming more aware to the needs of our learners, we are in turn creating a classroom that puts learning at the forefront. Currently, there is enough seating for all students to have a chair and a table/desk at any time during the day. We hope that this is helpful in explaining some of the changes that are happening!

  2. I'm so excited about the new learning environment! It seems like creative and open-minded teaching at its best! I know my son will definitely benefit from being able to complete work in different positions or areas of a classroom. And even better, he won't be singled out by wanting to complete his work differently! Thank you for trying new things!! That's really where learning happens best for everyone, teachers and students. I can't wait to hear the updates from my son. Keep up the good work!
